Zawciąg nadmorski tworzy zwarte kępki. Jego liście są wydłużone, trawiaste, w zależności od odmiany zielone, czerwonawo-purpurowe lub pstre, na brzegu często pofałdowane. Miododajne kwiaty zebrane w główkowate kwiatostany na bezlistnych szypułkach podziwiać można między majem a lipcem. Mogą one być koloru, białego, różowego w odcieniach. Armeria maritima świetnie sprawdza się w ogródkach skalnych, na murkach, na rabatach oraz w ogrodach wrzosowiskowych.
