Grube łodygi mikołajka płaskolistnego silnie rozgałęziają się na górze. Najciekawsze w tej roślinie są stalowo-niebieskie kwiatostany o jajowatym kształcie, otoczone kryzą spiczastych podsadek. Od czerwca do sierpnia kwiatostany te zwabiają roje pszczół i motyle. Mikołajek jest niezastąpioną rośliną do ogrodu naturalistycznego, na rabaty, na łąki kwietne. Można go wykorzystywać na kwiat cięty do suchych bukietów. Za zainteresowaniem się tą byliną przemawiają również jej niesłychanie skromne wymagania. Mikołajek płaskolistny rośnie na każdej glebie, nawet w piasku, dzięki palowemu korzeniowi, który sięga bardzo głęboko. Wymaga stanowisk wapiennych, słonecznych. Dobrze znosi suszę, nie lubi stojącej wody zimą.
